Most excavation on a residential property here is not a big civil job. It is a lawn that needs levelling, a patio or path that needs a base dug out, a drainage line that needs trenching, or an overgrown corner that needs stripping back and carting away. That work sits right in the middle of what we do.
We have been landscaping in the Wakatipu Basin since 2007, so we know what is under the surface: shallow topsoil over gravel and schist, sections cut into slopes, and access that is usually tighter than it looks on a plan.

Earthworks and Excavation in Queenstown
Earthworks covers everything that happens before a garden gets built. Ground is stripped back, levels are cut, bases and trenches are dug, and material is moved around the site or taken off it. On most residential properties in Queenstown and the wider Wakatipu Basin that is a job for a compact machine and an operator who knows what the finished result has to look like.
We take on excavation as part of a wider landscaping project, and as a standalone job for homeowners who already know what they need. Typical work includes shaping and levelling ground for new lawn, digging and preparing bases for patios, paths and decks, drainage behind retaining walls, trenching for irrigation, forming planting beds and tree pits, pulling out stumps and roots, and post hole boring.
We are also straight about where a small machine stops. Bulk earthworks, building platforms and consented civil work need heavier gear and a civil contractor, and we will tell you that rather than take on a job the machine is wrong for. What size excavator do you use, and will it fit down the side of my house?
We run a compact excavator under two tonnes with a range of buckets. It is the size of machine that suits most residential work: enough reach and grunt for levelling, trenching and base digging, while still light enough to track across a finished section without wrecking the ground. Machines this size are built to pass through a standard gateway of around a metre, and we check access before quoting. If it is genuinely too tight we will say so and talk you through the options, whether that is taking out a fence panel for the day or doing the work by hand.
Do you do driveways, house pads and bigger earthworks?
We excavate and prepare driveways, parking areas and paths at a residential scale. Bulk earthworks, building platforms and consented civil work are a different job that needs heavier machinery, and a civil contractor is the right call there. If your job falls into that category we will tell you upfront rather than take it on.
Can you do the landscaping once the earthworks are finished?
That is usually how it goes. Most of our excavation work is the first stage of a bigger project, and the same team carries on with turf, planting, paving or fencing once the ground is ready. You are not handing off between two contractors and hoping the levels line up.
